오늘 소개드릴 시인은 19세기 미국의 시인인 Ralph Waldo Emerson입니다. 종교적인 집안에서 태어난 영향인지, 본인도 신학대학을 졸업하는 행보를 보이며 철학에 관심을 많이 가졌고, 당시 미국 사회의 사상에 영향을 많이 준 인물입니다.

 

작품 중에서 유명한 것 중 하나가 바로 콩코드 찬송가, Concord Hymn입니다. 미국의 독립기념일인 7월 4일을 기념하고 그 희생을 기억하자는 의미의 애국시로, 특히 1연의 마지막 줄, And fired the shot heard round the world 가 유명한 구절이었다고 합니다.

Sung at the Completion of the Battle Monument, July 4, 1837

By the rude bridge that arched the flood,

   Their flag to April’s breeze unfurled,

Here once the embattled farmers stood

   And fired the shot heard round the world.

 

The foe long since in silence slept;

   Alike the conqueror silent sleeps;

And Time the ruined bridge has swept

   Down the dark stream which seaward creeps.

 

On this green bank, by this soft stream,

   We set today a votive stone;

That memory may their deed redeem,

   When, like our sires, our sons are gone.

 

Spirit, that made those heroes dare

   To die, and leave their children free,

Bid Time and Nature gently spare

   The shaft we raise to them and thee.
